ALERT for Instructors (Sessionals/LTA’s/B Faculty) who have signed a sessional teaching contract that says you will be given $100 if your class is cancelled.
It has come to the attention of the FSA that the employer is not always paying the $100 that is outlined in your contracts when a class is cancelled. We encourage instructors to reach out to HR if you are unsure whether your $100 was paid when your class was cancelled. We also encourage you to reach out to the FSA [email protected] to make us aware. If we find that this is happening to several employees, we may put forward a policy grievance.
We have brought to the attention of the employer that the contracts that they are using do not include Collective Agreement Language around cancelled classes, and that must be rectified immediately. The following Collective Agreement language outlines what SHOULD happen when a class is cancelled. This language should be present in your contracts with clear instructions on how to initiate those steps:
18.4 Step 6
Step 6 Sessionals who have worked during the previous two academic years shall be offered the same workload as the previous academic year by seniority in their position and by qualifications, up to a maximum of three (3) courses. In the event a Sessional faculty member accepts a course under this step that is subsequently canceled by the University, mutually acceptable arrangements to replace the course will be explored. These will include, but not be limited to, a right of first refusal to unassigned courses in a subsequent semester within the same academic year. Where such arrangements are not possible, the Sessional faculty member will be entitled to exercise seniority rights to a course allocated in Step 7 below provided the Sessional faculty member is qualified to teach that course.
In solidarity,
FSA
