Get the Complete Picture of UFV’s Precarious Workforce
March 1, 2021
We’re at work on a special issue of Words & Vision focusing on precarious work. In the coming weeks, we’ll have an inside look at how sessional and auxiliary experiences at UFV are strikingly different from their permanent colleagues, what percentage of the UFV workforce is made up of temporary work, and what you can do to advocate for change.
If you are a part of the non-permanent workforce and would like to contribute to the conversation and understanding, feel free to email [email protected] & [email protected] . We won’t share any names or identifying details in our communications with members and administrators, allowing you complete anonymity.
We know from our previous Burden of Care report that addressed pandemic remote work realities, that UFV membership, management, and administration took notice, and in many cases, expressed concern. We want to assure you: your stories inform and plant seeds for change even if you don’t see the results right away.
Sharing our stories collectively allows us to represent all members better when it comes time for bargaining. We’d like to hear your precarious work stories early so that we are able to share them with members who may not be aware of the additional stress and uncertainty some of their colleagues are under. We’d like to do this before it comes time for pre-bargaining surveys of membership so we can all be made aware of the better workplace we are envisioning and how we are going to get there.
Toni Latour,
FPSE Non-Regular Employees Rep

Update June 7, 2021:

Pursuant to the ongoing, UFV-FSA precarious work conversation, this report covers the issues faced by employees with limited-term contracts such as auxiliary workers, C and D type contract staff, limited term, sessional, and contract faculty.
Much appreciation and respect for the dedicated and tireless work of our Non-Regular Faculty Rep Toni Latour and to the regularized and non-regularized members who have submitted their stories for the benefit of the members who did not feel safe to do so. We are committed to your anonymity. Your colleagues stand beside you and bear witness to your experience and continue to advocate for a more equitable workplace.
