Dear FSA Members,

In May of 2018 I stepped into a role that had had been unexpectedly vacated because the person had to step away on an unplanned leave. I did my best to learn the ropes and serve you to the best of my ability. After a year I shifted into the role of FSA President in May of 2019.

The FSA has a huge job serving both Staff and Faculty at UFV. All other universities and colleges in our area have at least two unions doing the work that we do while paying higher dues.

All of us in the FSA work to serve all of you but this work is hard.

As workers much of our identity is derived by what we do. At the FSA we do our best to ensure that you and who you are is recognized in the workplace. We do our best to ensure that your rights and privileges are represented.

After almost 5 years of working for you, I am exhausted. This work is emotionally draining and as a result I must step away.

During this time, we have accomplished much, we have challenged the employer to do better. We have represented you during a global pandemic including all the resultant Health and safety concerns. But more importantly we have been there for you when you had a workplace challenge.

After countless sleepless nights waking up in a cold sweat thinking of a case where a member is being harmed, I have concluded that for my own health I cannot continue in this role.

I will be stepping down on March 20th.

Remember one thing – the FSA is stronger together – get involved and serve.

After 5 years I must step away not because the job is done but because I am emotionally and mentally exhausted. As an association we need to recognize that we need to increase the resources that we apply to serving you.  I speak on behalf of myself but also for the sake of those who will continue to serve you. I stepped into the FSA 5 years ago because someone else needed to step away. The current model of burning through people is unsustainable and is causing harm to people.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve but I need a break.

In Solidarity

Rod Hayward

Faculty and Staff Association President
