National Day of Remembrance and a Call to Serve on the Gender Equity Committee

December 4, 2020

December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. We pause and remember the 14 women of Polytechnique Montréal who were murdered in an act of horrendous misogyny.

In order to mark this day, please take some time to view the short presentation prepared by UFV:

Although it’s been over 30 years since this tragedy took place, we unfortunately still live in a world where girls, women, non-binary, and trans folks face unacceptable discrimination and violence.

We know that the pandemic has amplified gender-based violence, and we know that the burden of care (of children and of the elderly) is unevenly placed on the shoulders of women.

Furthermore, we understand how our identities within race, sexuality, indigeneity, ability, and class intersect and interact with gender identity to form varying, amplified, and complicated contexts of discrimination, exploitation, violence, and abuse.

At this time, as your representative to FPSE for the “Status of Women”, and in collaboration with the existing Gender & Society Network, I am forming a new group on campus. Please consider taking action by joining our Gender Equity Network (GEN). We will be intersectional and inclusive by design and will work collaboratively with other equity groups on campus and beyond. All members of the UFV community are welcome. We have important work to do.
