National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6, 2022

Dear members:

December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. We pause and remember the 14 women of Polytechnique Montréal who were murdered in an act of horrendous misogyny.

On December 6, we remember:

  • Geneviève Bergeron
  • Hélène Colgan
  • Nathalie Croteau
  • Barbara Daigneault
  • Anne-Marie Edward
  • Maud Haviernick
  • Maryse Laganière
  • Maryse Leclair
  • Anne-Marie Lemay
  • Sonia Pelletier
  • Michèle Richard
  • Annie St-Arneault
  • Annie Turcotte
  • Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz

Although it’s been over 30 years since this tragedy took place, we unfortunately still live in a world where girls, women, non-binary, and trans folks face unacceptable discrimination and violence.

We know that the pandemic has amplified gender-based violence, and we know that the burden of care (of children and of the elderly) is still unevenly placed on the shoulders of women.

Furthermore, we understand how our identities within race, sexuality, indigeneity, ability, and class intersect and interact with gender identity to form varying, amplified, and complicated contexts of discrimination, exploitation, violence, and abuse.

Please consider joining our Gender Equity Network (GEN). We are intersectional and inclusive by design and all members of the UFV community are welcome. We have important work to do. Please email me with your interest:
