Proposed Changes to the Municipal Pension Plan

Attention staff members, there are recent proposed changes to MPP you should be aware of.

September 16, 2020

Hello staff members,

This is to let you know of proposed changes to the municipal pension plan. The plan is a joint trusteeship (which means plan members and employers share oversight of the plan), and the proposed MPP redesign is an initiative being led by the plan partners (who are also the plan sponsors). The proposed plan is designed to…

  • Improve equity for members
  • Align benefits with how the majority of members use them
  • Set a strong foundation for the long-term sustainability of the plan
  • Not increase plan costs as a whole

To learn more and to use the online calculator developed for the proposed plan, visit mppredesign.ca. On the website you’ll find the following:

  • Background about the plan redesign
  • Explanation of proposed changes
  • Why the changes are being proposed
  • Calculator to estimate effects of proposed plan redesign on your pension

The plan partners will make a final decision in Spring 2021, and proposed changes would apply to future service on and after January 1, 2022, except where stated otherwise.

I encourage you to check out the website to learn more, read the FAQ’s, and use the calculator to see what these changes will mean for you.

Warm regards,

Melissa Naman
